Alan Thorndike races in his 33rd consecutive Derby... and stops to help an injured
PostedTuesday, March 09, 2010

From Alan Thorndike - The best Derby ever, thanks to your gold medal performance. The blue sky,  sunshine, and soft snow certainly helped.

I stopped to help an injured racer who had dislocated his shoulder and
was trying to keep traction on his arm to avoid excruciating pain. Cindy
McKechnie and Chris Altadonna also stopped to help. We called on our cell
phone for Rescue Squad help and were on our away in about 20 minutes to
finish the race. The experience sure brought perspective to what is
important in life. Looking back at the experience, I suppose there was a
momentary disappointment in having to pull over, but there is about a
million times more benefit in providing aid and assistance to somebody who
is down and injured than there is in placing higher on the timesheet.

Thanks for everything.

Alan
