Preparing Your Home for Severe Weather

By David

As severe weather season approaches, it’s important to make sure your home is prepared. From hurricanes to tornadoes, severe weather can cause damage and even loss of life. By taking some simple steps to prepare your home, you can help keep your family safe.

  1. Inspect your home for potential hazards.

Start by taking a look around your home for anything that could become a hazard in severe weather. Loose branches or tree limbs could fall and cause damage or injury, so trimming them back is important. Gutters and downspouts should be clear of debris to prevent flooding. And make sure your windows and doors are in good repair to help keep high winds from causing damage.

  1. Stock up on supplies.

Having a stock of supplies on hand is crucial in severe weather. Make sure you have enough non-perishable food and water to last at least three days. You’ll also need a first-aid kit, flashlights, and batteries. If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, have extra wood and kindling on hand. And don’t forget about your pets! Make sure you have enough food and water for them as well.

Fill your freezer with ice (one or two trays won’t do the trick). This way, if the power goes out, you can open the freezer door less often, which will help keep your food cold. If you’re in a high-rise building, be sure to pack extra batteries, flashlights, and candles in case the elevator is out of service. If you must leave the area, don’t leave your pet behind. If you don’t have a friend or relative who can keep your pet safely, there are a number of animal shelters in the area where you can take your pet.

  1. Have a plan.

Once you’ve taken care of the physical preparations, it’s time to focus on the plan. If severe weather is headed your way, handyman in Hubert know where you’ll go and how you’ll get there. Have a designated safe room in your home, and make sure everyone in your family knows where it is. If you need to evacuate, know your route and have a plan for where you’ll go. And finally, make sure you have a way to stay in touch with your family in case of an emergency.

By taking these steps to prepare your home for severe weather, you can help keep your family safe. Stay safe this severe weather season!
